LAWMAKERS REVEAL WHAT REALLY MATTERS—And It's Not Politics!

LAWMAKERS REVEAL WHAT REALLY MATTERS—And It's Not Politics!

As the nation prepares to gather in gratitude, even the halls of Capitol Hill echo with reflections on thankfulness. Lawmakers, often caught in the whirlwind of policy and debate, paused to share what truly holds meaning during this Thanksgiving season.

For Representative Erin Houchin, the holiday is a “real blessing,” a chance to serve alongside the weight of responsibility. Others simply expressed relief at escaping the intensity of Washington, D.C., for a few precious days.

Representative Jim McGovern eagerly anticipates returning to Massachusetts, describing the recent weeks in Congress as a “s--- show.” He plans to channel that energy into a long-standing tradition: a 43-mile walk to benefit a Western Massachusetts food bank, jokingly suggesting it might be his last public appearance.

The season also brings renewed joy for some. House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington and former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, both experiencing personal milestones, expressed deep gratitude for family.

Hoyer, who remarried in June after losing his first wife in 1997, cherishes his newfound happiness and the well-being of his 17 grandchildren. Arrington, looking ahead to retirement in 2026 after a decade of service, is thankful for the opportunity to have served and looks forward to prioritizing his own family.

Representative Tom Suozzi emphasized the importance of cultivating gratitude as a daily practice, even amidst challenges. He believes a thankful attitude is essential for navigating life’s ups and downs.

Beyond the weighty matters of state, simple traditions offer comfort and joy. Houchin fondly remembers a family popsicle stick ornament contest, while Representative Anna Paulina Luna plans a Thanksgiving marathon of “Harry Potter” films.

For Arrington, the holiday is synonymous with abundant food and football, while Hoyer confessed a simple love for turkey and gravy. These small pleasures, shared with loved ones, represent the heart of Thanksgiving for those serving the nation.
