SHARKS UNDER ATTACK: Global Rescue Mission Launched!

SHARKS UNDER ATTACK: Global Rescue Mission Launched!

A monumental shift occurred this week in Uzbekistan, as global leaders dramatically increased protections for over 70 species of sharks and rays. The decision, reached at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), is being celebrated as a landmark victory for ocean conservation.

For years, these magnificent creatures have faced escalating threats from relentless overfishing and the devastating impacts of a changing climate. Experts have sounded the alarm, warning that populations are plummeting, pushing many species towards the brink of extinction.

The new regulations place iconic species like whale sharks, manta rays, and devil rays under the highest level of protection – Appendix I – effectively banning their international trade. This means commercial sales of these vulnerable animals are now prohibited, offering a critical lifeline for their survival.

Manta rays are among the species that will have upgraded protections.

The critically endangered oceanic whitetip shark received similar protections just prior, signaling a growing global awareness of the urgent need for action. This wasn’t a solitary win; a broad spectrum of other shark species, including those hunted for their meat, fins, and valuable liver oil, were added to Appendix II.

Appendix II designation means trade will now be carefully regulated, permitted only when demonstrably sustainable. This represents a crucial step towards managing fisheries responsibly and preventing further depletion of vulnerable populations.

The consensus reached after intense debate marks a turning point in how the world views sharks. Barbara Slee, a senior program manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare, described the outcome as a “historical win,” emphasizing the need to treat sharks as conservation priorities, not simply as a fishing resource.

The stakes are incredibly high. Over a third of all ray and shark species are currently threatened with extinction, a sobering statistic driven by targeted hunting and accidental capture in fishing gear. The demand for shark fins, liver oil, and meat fuels a destructive trade that decimates populations.

This landmark decision offers a powerful wave of hope for the future of sharks and rays. It signals a commitment to ending unsustainable fishing practices and fostering a new era of ocean stewardship, one where these incredible creatures can thrive once more.
