A bold new landmark is rising in Cebu, a testament to the province’s burgeoning potential and a beacon for the future of business and tourism. A substantial P3.6 billion investment is fueling the construction of a state-of-the-art convention center, poised to redefine the landscape of events in the Visayas.
The SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu will be a sprawling six-story complex, offering an impressive 21,000 square meters of flexible event space. Designed to accommodate up to 18,000 attendees, it promises to be a dynamic hub for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions – the vibrant MICE sector.
Strategically located within South Coast City, a 26-hectare master-planned estate, the center is envisioned as a cornerstone of a thriving business and lifestyle destination. Completion is anticipated in late 2026, adding a significant asset to Cebu’s growing infrastructure.
This expansion will elevate SMX’s total event-leasable area across the Philippines to an impressive 80,000 square meters. It joins a network of eight existing convention centers, spanning key cities from Manila to Davao, solidifying SM’s position as a leader in the industry.
Beyond Seaside Cebu, SM Prime is also focused on the future, with plans to complete the SMX Center for International Trade and Exhibitions (SMXCITE) in Pasay City by 2027. This ongoing commitment demonstrates a clear vision for growth and innovation.
The project isn’t simply about building a structure; it’s about revitalizing a region. Executives express hope that the new center will play a pivotal role in reigniting Cebu’s tourism and business sectors, particularly after recent challenges.
Cebu’s economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience, expanding by 7.3% in 2024 – exceeding the national growth rate. However, the region has faced setbacks from natural disasters, underscoring the need for robust and adaptable infrastructure.
Safety and preparedness are paramount. The convention center will be built to exceed updated building codes and stringent seismic safety standards. Comprehensive emergency systems, including clearly marked exits and communication networks, will be integrated throughout the facility.
Regular structural inspections, evacuation drills, and thorough staff training will be ongoing priorities, ensuring a secure environment for all attendees. This commitment to safety reflects a dedication to responsible development.
The demand is already evident, with several significant trade events already secured for the venue. Philconstruct Cebu is slated for 2026, followed by Wofex Visayas in 2027, signaling strong industry confidence.
The investment in convention centers is already yielding positive results for SM Prime. Third-quarter net income rose by 8% to P12.8 billion, with hotel and convention center revenues contributing a substantial P6 billion – a 9% increase.
The market responded favorably to the news, with SM Prime stocks experiencing a modest increase, closing at P22.80. This reflects investor confidence in the company’s strategic direction and the potential of the Cebu project.
