A 43-year-old man is now facing charges in connection with the devastating death of a 27-year-old woman struck by two vehicles in Scarborough earlier this year.
The tragedy unfolded on May 8th, shortly before 9:30 p.m., as the woman walked along Birchmount Road near Anaconda Avenue. She was struck not once, but twice, by separate vehicles that both fled the scene, leaving her with no chance.
Witnesses described a horrifying scene: a white cargo van initially struck the woman, sending her airborne for approximately 15 metres. Before anyone could react, a second vehicle, travelling in the opposite direction, ran her over.
One witness, desperately trying to help the dying woman, had moments before called 911, reporting a pedestrian wandering into live traffic lanes. His warning came too late.
Security camera footage revealed a chilling sequence of events. Over a 30-second period, at least six northbound vehicles slowed or swerved to avoid the woman. Two vehicles even veered into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing her before she vanished from view.
A white cargo van, matching the description given by witnesses, was located the following day near Kingston and McCowan Roads. This led investigators to identify and arrest Gregory Manzer of Toronto.
Manzer is charged with leaving an accident scene causing death and careless driving causing bodily harm or death. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 20, 2026.
The search continues for the second vehicle involved – a dark-coloured SUV – and its driver. This vehicle remains at large, and investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Police are also seeking to identify the drivers of three other vehicles present at the scene: a black Chevy Tahoe, a light-coloured SUV, and a dark sedan. These drivers may hold crucial information about the events that transpired.
Anyone with knowledge of this tragic incident is urged to contact police at 416-808-3200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). The investigation remains active, seeking justice for the woman and answers for her loved ones.
This incident adds to a disturbing pattern of pedestrian fatalities. Recent cases include an elderly man killed while walking his dog in Hamilton and the arrest of a driver in a hit-and-run that claimed the life of a man in Mississauga.
