Hoover’s pain is raw and his message is stark: the administration failed to adequately vet individuals brought to the United States after the fall of Afghanistan. The shooting, which injured two National Guardsmen near the White House, involved Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who arrived in the US in 2021 through “Operation Allies Welcome.” Hoover contends this program, intended to assist those who aided the US mission, became a pathway for unchecked entry.
He recalls a premonition shared by other families of fallen service members – a deep concern that welcoming thousands of Afghans without rigorous background checks would inevitably lead to danger. This fear, he believes, has now tragically materialized on American soil.
Hoover’s grief extends beyond his son’s death. He previously confronted President Biden over a statement made during a debate, claiming no US service members had died during his presidency. The lack of individual acknowledgement for those lost, he says, was a profound insult.
Staff Sergeant Taylor Hoover dedicated eleven years to the Marine Corps, completing three deployments to Afghanistan. He was engaged to be married, his future stolen by the events unfolding in Kabul. His father now sees a direct line between that loss and the current crisis.
