POWER GRAB: Minister SEIZES Control of Schools!

POWER GRAB: Minister SEIZES Control of Schools!

A stunning move in Ontario’s education system has unfolded: the province’s Education Minister, Paul Calandra, has directly taken control of the Near North District School Board. He’s not sending an outside supervisor – he *is* the supervisor, assuming direct authority over its operations.

The decision stems from accusations of deep-seated incompetence and a failure to adequately serve students. Calandra cited a damning ministry review revealing significant flaws in the board’s governance and leadership, painting a picture of systemic dysfunction.

The immediate catalyst for this intervention was a disastrous rollout of a new school in Parry Sound. Hundreds of elementary students were forced to start the year learning in a different location, while high school students began their studies in a building described as “half-demolished.” The situation created chaos and disruption for the entire community.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Calandra has already installed supervisors at five other school boards, citing widespread mismanagement as the driving force behind these interventions. He believes a stronger hand is needed to ensure accountability and protect student interests.

The Minister has been vocal about the need for increased authority, stating the ministry must be empowered to step in when school boards “go off the rails.” Balancing the budget, he insists, is no longer enough; boards must demonstrate responsible and effective operation.

The sweeping changes are rooted in recent controversies, including a highly publicized and costly art-shopping trip to Italy undertaken by trustees from the Brantford Catholic board. The excursion, ultimately costing nearly $200,000, sparked public outrage and fueled calls for greater oversight.

Bill 33, passed earlier this year, provides the legal framework for these interventions, granting the Education Minister expanded powers over school boards and trustees. This includes the ability to reinstate school resource officers and exert control over school naming and renaming processes.

The implications of this new authority are already being felt. In Toronto, a supervisor appointed by Calandra has overruled a recommendation from school trustees to rename three schools – Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute, Ryerson Community School, and Dundas Junior Public School – signaling a firm stance on historical naming conventions.

These actions represent a dramatic shift in the balance of power within Ontario’s education system, raising questions about local control and the role of the provincial government in overseeing public schools. The coming months will reveal the full extent of these changes and their impact on students, educators, and communities across the province.
