GUARD DOWN: DC Mission Hangs as Troops REEL From Attack!

A wave of grief and determination swept through West Virginia as officials provided updates on the condition of wounded Guardsman SSgt. Andrew Wolfe and mourned the loss of Spc. Sarah Beckstrom. Both soldiers were shot while patrolling near the Farragut West Metro station in Washington, D.C., allegedly by an Afghan evacuee.

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced a crucial shift in Wolfe’s status, upgrading him from “critical” to “serious.” While cautious about predicting the future, the governor relayed hopeful news from those at the hospital – a small but significant response to a simple request.

“Andrew was asked if he could hear the nurse and give a ‘thumbs up,’ and he did respond,” Morrisey shared, highlighting the unwavering strength of Wolfe’s mother, Melody, and her husband, Jason, who asked only for continued prayers.

The state held vigils to honor Beckstrom in Webster County and a prayer service for Wolfe in Martinsburg, a somber reminder of the sacrifice made just 80 miles from the nation’s capital. The outpouring of support demonstrated the deep connection between the community and those who serve.

Governor Morrisey and Maj. Gen. James Seward, adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard, spent Thanksgiving Day with the 170 Guardsmen currently volunteering in Washington, D.C. Each member, the governor emphasized, chose to be there.

“They’re volunteering because they believe in the mission – they want to support the state of West Virginia, and they want to support the country,” Morrisey stated, underscoring the selfless dedication of these soldiers. He condemned the attack as an “unspeakable evil.”

Morrisey firmly rejected speculation surrounding the incident, emphasizing the importance of allowing the ongoing investigation to unfold without interference. He acknowledged the righteous anger felt by West Virginians and vowed that justice would be served.

The governor voiced support for enhanced vetting processes for those entering the country, echoing calls for closing loopholes in refugee vetting procedures. He indicated he had been in contact with President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi regarding the matter.

Maj. Gen. Seward acknowledged the profound impact of Beckstrom’s death and Wolfe’s injuries on the entire West Virginia National Guard, a force of approximately 6,000 strong. “When we lose one of our family members, every Guardsmen is grieving,” he said.

The tragedy has resonated deeply within the Guard, a close-knit community now united in sorrow and a shared commitment to honoring the memory of Spc. Beckstrom and supporting the recovery of SSgt. Wolfe.
