A desperate search is underway in and around Atlanta for an inmate who vanished from a hospital bed, leaving authorities scrambling and the public on edge.
Timothy Shane, described as “armed and dangerous,” escaped from Grady Memorial Hospital early Monday morning after being brought in for a medical evaluation following a suicide attempt. The circumstances surrounding his escape are rapidly unfolding, painting a picture of calculated risk and brazen defiance.
Shane arrived at the hospital around 8 p.m. Sunday, escorted by both emergency medical personnel and sheriff’s deputies. Less than six hours later, at approximately 1:20 a.m., he was gone, slipping away while under the watch of a deputy.
The escape didn’t end at the hospital doors. Shane’s flight led him to a nearby stolen SUV, from which a Glock handgun has now disappeared. Investigators believe he initially fled on foot before commandeering the vehicle, adding another layer of danger to the situation.
The stolen SUV didn’t travel far. Shane crashed the vehicle and once again vanished, this time disappearing on foot, and potentially armed with the stolen handgun. The possibility that he remains at large with a weapon is fueling the intensity of the manhunt.
Authorities aren’t dealing with a first-time offender. Shane has a documented history of evading capture, coupled with a criminal record that includes serious felony charges related to drugs and weapons. This past behavior underscores the urgency of the search.
He is described as a white male, standing 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a distinctive buzz-style haircut. When last seen, he was wearing only a blue hospital gown and was barefoot, a stark image that highlights the vulnerability – and potential desperation – of his situation.
Hospital policy dictates that law enforcement agencies maintain constant, one-to-one supervision of inmates receiving treatment. The details of how Shane managed to escape despite this protocol are now under intense scrutiny.
Multiple law enforcement units are currently deployed across the area, meticulously searching for any sign of Shane. As of Monday afternoon, the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office reported no significant new developments, but the search continues relentlessly.
