CITY CANCELS CHRISTMAS: Palestinian Flag Flies at Tree Lighting!

CITY CANCELS CHRISTMAS: Palestinian Flag Flies at Tree Lighting!

A wave of controversy has erupted in Portland, Oregon, surrounding its annual tree lighting ceremony. While the event sparkled with festive lights, a towering Douglas-fir, and even a visit from Santa Claus, a crucial element was conspicuously absent: any mention of Christmas itself.

Instead of celebrating a traditional Christmas tree lighting, organizers promoted the occasion as “Portland’s 41st Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.” This deliberate omission has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many questioning the motivations behind downplaying the holiday’s religious origins.

The event took an unexpected turn when a woman took the stage, waving a Palestinian flag and leading the crowd in chants of “Free, free, free Palestine.” This political demonstration, interwoven with a performance of the “Strong Woman Song” alongside members of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, further fueled the debate.

The timing of the ceremony, coinciding with Native American Heritage Day, was also highlighted by a speaker who acknowledged the complex history of the tree’s relocation, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living things and the deep respect indigenous cultures hold for nature.

Social media quickly became a battleground, with residents expressing outrage over the perceived erasure of Christmas. Many felt the event had been hijacked for political messaging, transforming a family-friendly tradition into a platform for ideological statements.

One observer noted the city and local media’s reluctance to use the word “Christmas,” referring instead to simply “the tree.” Others lamented the gradual erosion of traditional values and the potential for further cultural shifts if such practices continue unchecked.

Despite the uproar, Portland’s Mayor Keith Wilson’s office defended the event, explicitly calling it a “Christmas Tree Lighting” and dismissing the criticisms as an overreaction. However, this response did little to quell the growing discontent among those who felt their traditions were being disregarded.

The controversy underscores a deeper cultural tension, raising questions about the balance between inclusivity, respect for diverse perspectives, and the preservation of long-held traditions during a significant cultural holiday.

For many in Portland, the event served as a stark reminder of a changing landscape, where even the most cherished symbols of the season are subject to reinterpretation and, for some, a perceived loss of meaning.
