A Minnesota Court of Appeals judge found herself on the other side of the law over the weekend, arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Judge Renee Lee Worke was taken into custody in Steele County, a stark fall from the bench she presides over.
The arrest, initially reported by local observers, resulted in a brief detention – just four hours – before she was released. While no formal charges have been filed yet, the initial indication points to probable cause for a Driving While Intoxicated offense.
This incident isn’t isolated. A troubling pattern is emerging within the judicial system, raising questions about accountability and the potential for abuse of power. Just last month, a high-ranking Iowa judge faced similar accusations.
Iowa Chief Judge Adria Kester was charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated after a harrowing incident on Highway 30. Witnesses reported seeing her slumped over the steering wheel, her vehicle drifting into oncoming traffic before she passed out.
The scene was alarming enough to prompt multiple 911 calls. Kester’s vehicle had veered into the opposite lane, narrowly avoiding a collision before she lost consciousness. She has since pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The troubling trend continued further south, in Georgia, where a Superior Court Judge faced arrest in September. Robert Guy Jr. allegedly backed his Mercedes into a Ford F-150 in the parking lot of a gentlemen’s club.
The situation escalated when Guy reportedly offered the truck owner $500 to avoid exchanging information. Unable to drive away due to his level of intoxication, he was apprehended by authorities. Police noted slurred speech and a strong smell of alcohol.
These cases, spanning multiple states, paint a disturbing picture. They force a critical examination of the individuals entrusted with upholding the law and the consequences when they themselves are accused of breaking it.
