TRUMP PURGES JUDGES: Immigration System ERUPTS!

A wave of dismissals swept through the New York City immigration courts on Monday, leaving a trail of shock and disbelief. Eight immigration judges were abruptly fired, a move described by one former judge as a “Monday afternoon massacre.” The action signals a deepening disruption within the nation’s immigration system.

The terminations occurred at 26 Federal Plaza, a building central to immigration enforcement in New York City and headquarters for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Among those dismissed was Amiena A. Khan, a key figure as assistant chief immigration judge, responsible for supervising other judges at the location.

This latest round of firings isn’t isolated. Throughout the year, approximately 90 immigration judges have been removed from their positions across the United States, with six previously dismissed in New York City. The total number of judges fired or who have resigned since the start of the administration now exceeds 100.

The dismissals have ignited concerns about political interference and the erosion of judicial independence. Three recently fired judges – George Pappas, Jennifer Peyton, and Carla Espinoza – spoke out, alleging they faced pressure to rule in favor of dismissing cases.

“It was arbitrary, unfair,” stated George Pappas, characterizing the firings as “an attack on the rule of law.” Jennifer Peyton expressed her bewilderment, receiving a three-sentence email with no explanation for her termination. The atmosphere, according to Carla Espinoza, fostered fear and compromised impartiality.

Judges described a chilling reality where individuals were immediately taken into custody by ICE agents after leaving the courtroom, a practice that further fueled anxieties about due process. The swiftness and lack of transparency surrounding these firings have raised serious questions about the future of the immigration court system.

While some of the vacated positions have been filled – 36 judges nationwide, including two in New York – the sheer number of dismissals and the allegations of political pressure paint a troubling picture of a system under strain and potentially compromised.

The impact of these changes extends beyond the individual judges affected. It raises profound concerns about the fairness and integrity of immigration proceedings, and the ability of the courts to operate independently and impartially.
