Chrome Under SIEGE: Urgent Security Update + AI Just Dropped!

Chrome Under SIEGE: Urgent Security Update + AI Just Dropped!

A significant security overhaul has landed for Google Chrome, bringing the browser to version 143. Thirteen distinct vulnerabilities have been addressed in this update, impacting Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

The good news is that, as of now, Google reports no evidence of these weaknesses being actively exploited by attackers. This update arrives a week behind schedule, though the reason for the delay remains unexplained.

The fixes stem from reports submitted by external security researchers, highlighting the importance of collaborative vulnerability discovery. Google has categorized four of these issues as high risk, with a particularly concerning type confusion flaw within the JavaScript V8 engine taking center stage.

Beyond security, Chrome 143 introduces a new accessibility feature: the ability to have web pages read aloud. Users can activate a dedicated reading mode, then utilize controls for playback, speed, voice selection, and text highlighting.

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly integrated into the browsing experience. Chrome now offers direct access to Google Search’s “AI Mode” through the address bar and New Tab page, powered by Gemini.

Gemini, built directly into the browser, is designed to distill complex information, clarify difficult concepts, and provide answers to your questions. Initial availability is limited to English-speaking users in the US, with broader language support planned for the future.

This update follows a rapid response to a zero-day vulnerability earlier in November, prompting an emergency patch. The rollout of Chrome 143 experienced a further delay, initially slated for November 25th but ultimately released on December 2nd.

While Chrome typically updates automatically, users can manually check for updates via the “Help > About Google Chrome” menu. The Extended Stable Channel currently operates on an earlier Chromium version.

The ripple effect of this update extends to other browsers built on the Chromium foundation. Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi are currently operating at the security level established by the earlier emergency update.

Opera has taken a slightly different approach, releasing version 124 based on an older Chromium version while backporting the critical zero-day fix. However, they still lag behind in achieving full parity with the latest security measures.
