NBA Legend & Congressman Launch EMERGENCY Mission to Silence Childhood Stuttering!

NBA Legend & Congressman Launch EMERGENCY Mission to Silence Childhood Stuttering!

Former NBA player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is channeling his post-basketball passion into a powerful advocacy effort. He’s joined forces with Representatives Addison McDowell and Shomari Figures to champion a groundbreaking bill aimed at transforming early detection and treatment for childhood stuttering.

Kidd-Gilchrist, known for his years with the Charlotte Bobcats and Hornets, has become a dedicated voice for those who struggle with stuttering. His personal connection to the issue fuels his determination to ensure every child has access to the support they need.

The proposed legislation, dubbed “The Kidd’s Stuttering Act,” focuses on expanding access to crucial services for children covered by Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). It mandates early screenings for children aged two to six during routine well-child visits.

These screenings are critical, offering a significantly higher chance of recovery – a remarkable 75% – when stuttering is identified early. The bill doesn’t stop there; it also guarantees coverage for speech therapy services under Medicaid and CHIP, removing a significant barrier to care.

Representative McDowell emphasized the potential impact, stating that the bill provides a “real chance” to identify and address stuttering in thousands of children nationwide. He lauded Kidd-Gilchrist’s existing work, which has already brought positive change at the state level.

Following his NBA career, Kidd-Gilchrist founded Change & Impact Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to improving healthcare access for individuals who stutter. He’s already successfully advocated for state-level legislation in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Nevada, demonstrating his commitment to systemic change.

“Families should not have to fight for basic care that helps to make a difference in their child’s future,” Kidd-Gilchrist passionately stated. He understands firsthand the transformative power of early intervention and believes it’s a fundamental right, not a privilege.

The statistics underscore the urgency of this issue. Approximately 5% of all children experience a period of stuttering lasting six months or more. While many recover naturally, around 1% of the population – roughly 3 million people – live with long-term stuttering.

Globally, the National Institutes of Health estimates that 70 million adults are affected by stuttering disorders, highlighting the widespread need for improved awareness and support. This bill aims to address the problem at its earliest stages.

The legislation requires the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to incorporate stuttering and fluency screening into the core set of healthcare quality measures. This ensures consistent and standardized evaluation across the board.

Furthermore, it mandates that Medicaid well-child visits for children between two and six include stuttering screenings, and crucially, ensures that speech therapy services for stuttering are covered by Medicaid and CHIP. This addresses potential disparities in coverage compared to other speech therapies.

Representative Figures echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of early intervention for a child’s speech development, confidence, and overall well-being. He framed the legislation as a vital step in providing families with the support and medical coverage they deserve.

This collaborative effort represents a significant stride toward a future where every child who stutters receives the timely support and care they need to thrive, unlocking their full potential and empowering them to communicate with confidence.
