NYC teen arrested, charged with setting homeless subway rider on fire, police say

A chilling act of violence unfolded beneath the streets of New York City, leaving a 56-year-old man fighting for his life. An 18-year-old has been arrested and accused of deliberately setting the sleeping man ablaze on a northbound No. 3 train early Monday morning.

Hiram Carrero, a resident of Manhattan, now faces a barrage of charges including attempted murder, assault, arson, and reckless endangerment. The arrest came swiftly after the New York Police Department released surveillance footage of a suspect, igniting a city-wide search.

Investigators pieced together the horrifying sequence of events: Carrero boarded the train at Penn Station just after 3 a.m. Spotting the vulnerable man asleep, he allegedly ignited him and then calmly exited the train, disappearing into the city.

The victim suffered severe burns, the extent of which was shockingly revealed when authorities discovered skin transferred onto a subway seat. Despite the horrific injuries, medical personnel believe he will survive, a small mercy in a brutal attack.

The released footage depicts a figure clad in a gray jacket and black hat, casually opening a subway car door onto the platform – a seemingly ordinary action masking a terrifying intent. The image now haunts the city, a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk in unexpected places.

This incident echoes a similar, devastating attack just months prior. In December, a woman was tragically killed in an unprovoked arson attack on a Brooklyn subway train, a case that gripped the city with fear and grief.

That earlier case led to the arrest of Sebastian Zapeta, a 33-year-old previously deported from Guatemala. The echoes of that tragedy now reverberate with this new act of violence, raising questions about safety and vulnerability within the city’s transit system.
