The vibrant energy of a college football rivalry weekend in Austin, Texas, shattered with a devastating discovery. Brianna Aguilera, a 19-year-old cheerleader for Texas A&M, was found dead in the early hours of Saturday morning, hours after her team’s hard-fought game against the University of Texas.
Investigators determined Brianna Aguilera died by suicide, a conclusion reached after a painstaking review of evidence. She was discovered outside an apartment complex, suffering from injuries consistent with a fall from a significant height.
Security footage revealed Aguilera arrived at the apartment building around 11 p.m. Friday, making her way to an apartment on the 17th floor. A group of people later left the apartment around 12:30 a.m., leaving Aguilera and three other women inside.
A frantic search began when Aguilera’s phone went missing. She briefly borrowed a friend’s phone to call her boyfriend between 12:43 a.m. and 12:44 a.m. Tragically, just two minutes later, she leaped from the building.
Authorities recovered Aguilera’s lost phone and uncovered a deeply personal suicide note, addressed to specific people in her life. This discovery, coupled with prior concerning behavior, painted a heartbreaking picture.
Detectives revealed Aguilera had expressed suicidal thoughts to friends as early as October, and these feelings resurfaced on the night of her death. There were also indications of self-harm earlier in the evening, and a text message to a friend alluded to suicidal ideation.
Earlier that Friday, Aguilera had attended a tailgate party, where she consumed a significant amount of alcohol. She became so intoxicated that she was asked to leave the gathering, according to investigators.
However, Aguilera’s mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, vehemently disputes the claim that her daughter took her own life. She believes foul play was involved, suggesting Brianna may have been accidentally or intentionally pushed from the balcony.
Rodriguez explained that her daughter, though petite, had a tendency to become easily affected by alcohol. She fears Brianna may have become disoriented and fallen, or that others panicked and reacted poorly, leading to her death.
The family has retained legal counsel, and their attorney has publicly questioned the Austin Police Department’s handling of the investigation, seeking a more thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding Brianna Aguilera’s tragic death.
