Cole is accused of planting the two pipe bombs near the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic National Committees just before the January 6th Capitol breach.
Patel emphasized the sheer audacity of the crime – the suspect brazenly planted bombs in plain sight. He found it “completely unacceptable” that the FBI, for four years, failed to identify someone who acted so openly. The case underscored a critical failure in basic law enforcement functions, a gap his team aimed to rectify.
A seemingly minor detail ultimately proved pivotal: the suspect’s distinctive Nike sneakers. These weren’t a common style; production was limited, providing a tangible lead for investigators. Combining this with advanced cell phone tracking capabilities, the FBI began to narrow the search, matching physical descriptions and location data to potential suspects.
The FBI’s cell phone tracking systems, Patel explained, are among the most sophisticated in the world.
