GUARD UNDER FIRE: GOP DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY NOW!

A shadow hangs over the arrival of Afghan nationals to the United States, ignited by a recent tragedy. Two National Guard members – Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, wounded, and Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, tragically killed – were allegedly shot by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan man who entered the country through Operation Allies Welcome.

The incident has spurred a chorus of concern from Senate Republicans, who are now demanding a thorough re-evaluation of the vetting processes used for Afghan evacuees. They argue that assurances of “enhanced vetting” following the withdrawal from Afghanistan were, in fact, misleading.

At the heart of their concern lies a 2022 report from the Department of Defense Inspector General. This report revealed a critical flaw: Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome, the programs designed to resettle Afghan nationals, did not utilize crucial data from the Pentagon’s biometric identification system during initial vetting.

This oversight allowed potentially dangerous individuals to slip through the cracks. The National Ground Intelligence Center identified at least 50 evacuees with “potentially significant security concerns,” ranging from minor offenses to connections with improvised explosive devices.

The situation worsened as time passed. A subsequent report confirmed the Pentagon’s findings, revealing that roughly 31,000 Afghan evacuees were admitted into the country *before* the Department of Homeland Security even established a task force to properly vet and support their resettlement.

Intelligence suggests the problem may be far more widespread. Lawmakers have been informed of potentially hundreds of additional evacuees flagged by the FBI for possible links to terrorism *after* they had already arrived on American soil.

Now, a bipartisan group of senators is calling for immediate action. They are urging the Pentagon, Department of Homeland Security, and the intelligence community to revisit and implement the vetting procedures recommended years ago by the Department of Defense.

Their demand extends beyond simply reviewing procedures. They insist on locating and identifying those evacuees previously flagged for security concerns, and initiating the process of removing them from the United States – either back to Afghanistan or to suitable third countries.

The senators believe a comprehensive reassessment is not merely a matter of national security, but a solemn duty to honor the service and sacrifice of those like Spc. Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Wolfe, and to ensure the safety of all Americans.
