A dramatic shift has occurred at the border following the change in administration. Initial actions focused on reinforcing security, leading to a significant decrease in unlawful crossings – numbers haven’t been this low in years.
The previous four years witnessed an unprecedented influx, with an estimated fifteen million individuals entering the country illegally. This surge created immense challenges, and concerns grew regarding the potential for criminal activity within the borders.
Law enforcement agencies, particularly those in states directly impacted, have been working relentlessly to address the situation. The Texas Department of Public Safety, for example, has been at the forefront of these efforts, intercepting those attempting to circumvent legal entry.
A recent incident in Webb County exemplified the dangers involved. A high-speed chase ensued when troopers attempted to stop a vehicle suspected of human smuggling. The driver, Diego Hernandez Piña, lost control and collided with a semi-truck.
Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries in the crash. Piña, along with a 15-year-old from Mexico identified as the smuggling guide, was arrested and charged with the felony of human smuggling. The three individuals found concealed within the vehicle were turned over to Border Patrol for processing.
These pursuits are becoming increasingly common, stretching the resources of state law enforcement. Troopers are consistently encountering situations that demand immediate and decisive action to protect both citizens and those being exploited by smugglers.
Just last week, a routine traffic stop on Interstate 35 revealed a far more serious situation. State troopers discovered twenty-three individuals hidden inside a semi-truck during a probable cause search. The driver was found to be operating the vehicle without a valid commercial driver’s license.
The Constitution itself addresses this very issue. Article IV, Section 4, explicitly grants the federal government the responsibility to protect states from invasion. This crucial duty was, according to some, largely overlooked in recent years.
A renewed emphasis on enforcing existing laws and securing the border has marked the current administration’s approach. This represents a complete reversal of previous policies, with a clear focus on restoring order and upholding the rule of law.
The return to a stricter border policy signals a commitment to national security and a reassertion of federal authority. The implications of this shift are far-reaching, impacting communities across the nation and reshaping the landscape of immigration enforcement.
