Panic erupted at Heathrow Airport on Sunday as a brazen robbery unfolded in the Terminal 3 parking garage, unleashing a wave of chaos and leaving dozens struggling to breathe.
A woman was targeted by a group of four men who stole her suitcase inside an elevator, then deployed pepper spray as they made their escape. The potent irritant quickly spread, impacting a large number of travelers and creating a scene of immediate distress.
Emergency services responded swiftly, rushing five individuals to a nearby hospital for treatment. An additional sixteen people, including a young girl of three, received medical attention directly at the scene, though thankfully, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Passenger Tom Bate described a terrifying scene, witnessing three masked men fleeing the elevator. He immediately felt a burning sensation in his throat and began to cough uncontrollably, joining a chorus of others similarly affected.
“Everyone in the room was coughing,” Bate recounted. “It was one of the weirdest things I’ve ever experienced.” The sudden and unexpected attack left many fearing the worst.
The initial response was one of sheer terror, fueled by the unusual sight of armed police officers – a rarity in the United Kingdom – rushing through the terminal. Bate initially believed he was witnessing a terrorist attack.
“It was absolutely terrifying and I 100% believed that I was in a terrorist attack for a few moments,” he said, recalling the intense fear that gripped the area. Officers quickly moved to secure the scene and apprehend suspects.
A 31-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of assault, while authorities continue to search for the remaining three individuals involved in the robbery. Investigators have confirmed the victim and assailants were known to each other, ruling out terrorism as a motive.
The incident caused significant disruption to airport operations, resulting in several hours of delays for passengers attempting to travel to and from Heathrow. The ripple effect of the attack impacted countless journeys.
