The discovery occurred during a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) exploration of the Monterey Canyon, a vast underwater gorge off the coast of California. Scientists were documenting the biodiversity of the canyon when the jellyfish drifted into view, its unique pattern of bioluminescence immediately signaling something new.

What sets Atolla reynoldsi apart is its distinct flashing display. Unlike other jellyfish that emit a constant glow, this species produces a series of bright, concentric rings that ripple across its bell. Researchers believe this dazzling display serves as a defense mechanism, startling potential predators or attracting larger predators to attack whatever is threatening it.

The team painstakingly analyzed the ROV footage, comparing it to existing records of known jellyfish species. The subtle differences in its bell shape, tentacle arrangement, and bioluminescent pattern confirmed their suspicions: this was a species never before documented by science.

Finding a new species in this day and age is a rare and significant event. It underscores how much remains unknown about our planet’s oceans, and the importance of continued exploration and research. The deep sea, often considered a barren wasteland, is proving to be a hotbed of biodiversity.

The discovery of Atolla reynoldsi also highlights the fragility of these deep-sea ecosystems. These creatures are incredibly sensitive to changes in their environment, and the increasing threats of pollution, climate change, and deep-sea mining pose a serious risk to their survival.
