Former Congressman Colin Allred abruptly shifted his political focus Monday, ending his campaign for the U.S. Senate in Texas. The decision comes amidst growing speculation about a potential Senate run by Representative Jasmine Crockett, a rising star within the Democratic Party.
Allred framed his withdrawal as a strategic move to unify Democrats against the challenges posed by Donald Trump and prominent Texas Republicans. He expressed concern that a drawn-out and divisive primary battle would weaken the party’s chances in the critical upcoming election.
Instead of pursuing the Senate, Allred announced his intention to run for the newly-redrawn 33rd Congressional District. This district, currently held by Representative Marc Veasey, represents a return to his roots, a community where he experienced firsthand the struggles of working families.
The 33rd district’s boundaries have become a point of contention, with Allred asserting it was deliberately “racially gerrymandered” during the Trump administration. Despite this, he views it as a place deeply connected to his personal history and upbringing.
Allred’s path to Congress began in 2018, when he successfully flipped a traditionally Republican seat. A former college football player at Baylor University and NFL linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, he later transitioned to a career as a civil rights attorney before entering politics.
His previous Senate bid in 2024 against Ted Cruz, though ultimately unsuccessful, was a hard-fought and expensive campaign. Allred lost by eight points, but the race demonstrated his ability to compete at the statewide level.
Allred’s second Senate attempt, launched just this past July, quickly faced competition from state lawmaker James Talarico. Now, the potential entry of Jasmine Crockett adds another layer of complexity to the Democratic primary landscape.
Crockett, known for her outspoken progressive views and dynamic presence on social media, has rapidly gained prominence within the Democratic Party. She delivered a compelling speech at the Democratic National Convention last year, solidifying her position as a rising force.
While her strong opinions – including comparisons of Trump to Hitler and critiques of the Republican Party as leaning towards fascism – have drawn attention, they’ve also resonated with a significant segment of the Democratic base. She recently sought a leadership role on the House Oversight Committee.
On the Republican side, a competitive primary is already brewing for the Senate seat, featuring incumbent John Cornyn facing challenges from Attorney General Ken Paxton and Representative Wesley Hunt. The stage is now set for a potentially tumultuous election cycle in Texas.
