JAILBREAK NIGHTMARE: Escape Attempt Turns DEADLY!

JAILBREAK NIGHTMARE: Escape Attempt Turns DEADLY!

A daring escape unfolded in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, echoing scenes from a classic prison film, but with a tragic undercurrent. Three inmates exploited a critical weakness in the Opelousas jail, meticulously chipping away at aging concrete until a gap appeared – a testament to patience and desperation.

The breach wasn’t a display of brute force, but a slow, deliberate dismantling. Over time, they removed enough mortar to pull out concrete blocks, creating an opening just large enough for their escape. They then fashioned a makeshift rope from sheets and other materials, scaling the outer wall and descending to the ground.

Once free, the escapees scattered, each choosing a different path. Within days, two were located, but the outcome was devastating. One was found dead, the victim of a confrontation, while the search for the third, Keith Eli, continues relentlessly.

Keith Eli, 24, charged with second-degree murder, remains at large, prompting a widespread manhunt across southwestern Louisiana. Authorities have urged him to surrender peacefully, but vow to pursue him relentlessly, advising residents to secure their homes and vehicles.

Johnathan Jevon Joseph, 24, faced with charges of rape, was apprehended after a swift response to a tip. He attempted to evade capture by fleeing into a storage shed, but surrendered when officers closed in, highlighting the effectiveness of local intelligence.

The third escapee, Joseph Allen Harrington, 26, was also found, but his story ended in tragedy. After officers attempted to negotiate his surrender, Harrington took his own life with a hunting rifle, a desperate act that brought a somber end to his flight.

Two inmates accused of violent crimes, including second-degree attempted murder, are on the run after escaping from a south-western Louisiana jail, St. Landry Parish Jail in Opelousas, Louisiana, on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, by removing pieces of a deteriorating interior wall and using sheets to scale another outside wall, officials said. A third inmate who joined in the breakout died by suicide after he was tracked down. The sheriff?s office identified the two escaped inmates still on the loose as Keith Eli, 24, of Opelousas, who was facing a second-degree attempted murder charge, and Johnathan Jevon Joseph, 24, also of Opelousas, who was facing several charges, including principal to first-degree rape. The third escaper, Joseph Allen Harrington, 26, of Melville, who faced several felony charges, including home invasion, died by his own hand after he was found, the Port Barre, Louisiana, police chief, Deon Boudreaux, said by telephone.

This method of escape – exploiting structural decay – was unprecedented in the jail’s history. The incident underscores the challenges faced by aging correctional facilities, highlighting the constant need for vigilance and maintenance.

The breakout isn’t an isolated incident in Louisiana. Just months earlier, ten inmates in New Orleans escaped through a hole behind a toilet, leaving a taunting message in their wake. While all were eventually recaptured, the incident revealed a pattern of vulnerability within the state’s correctional system.
