ICE DEPORTATION NIGHTMARE: Family Fights Back!

ICE DEPORTATION NIGHTMARE: Family Fights Back!

A Brazilian woman, Bruna Ferreira, was unexpectedly detained by immigration officers while simply attempting to pick up her son from school. The arrest, occurring in Massachusetts on November 12th, thrust her into a legal battle and a detention center in Louisiana, far from her life and her child.

Ferreira’s case gained unexpected attention due to her connection to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt – she shares custody of an 11-year-old son with Leavitt’s brother, Michael. This family link quickly became a focal point as the details of her detention emerged.

On Monday, a significant shift occurred when an immigration judge ordered Ferreira’s release on a $1,500 bond. Judge Cynthia Goodman set the bond at the lowest possible amount, acknowledging the complexities of the case and the arguments presented by Ferreira’s legal team.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt speaks during a press briefing at the White House in Washington, Monday, Dec. 1, 2025.

The U.S. government had previously characterized Ferreira as a “criminal illegal alien,” referencing a past arrest for battery. However, her lawyers vehemently disputed this portrayal, arguing it was both unfair and inaccurate, presenting a stark contrast to the official narrative.

Adding another layer to the situation, the White House stated that Ferreira hadn’t spoken to Karoline Leavitt in years and had never resided with her son. This statement seemed to distance the press secretary from the case, despite the familial connection.

Notably, the Department of Homeland Security’s lawyer did not oppose Ferreira’s release, conceding that she posed no danger to the community and was unlikely to flee. This acknowledgment was a crucial step towards securing her freedom.

Public records reveal Ferreira has no criminal convictions, further undermining the earlier characterization. She has been a long-time resident of Massachusetts and maintains consistent contact with the Leavitt family through shared custody of her son.

Ferreira arrived in the United States at the age of six and has consistently sought legal residency. She previously benefited from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program under the Obama administration, receiving both work permits and temporary protection from deportation.

In a recent interview, Ferreira revealed she had even chosen Karoline Leavitt to be her son’s godmother, highlighting the personal connection that existed despite the current political circumstances. Her fight to remain in the country continues, even as she navigates this unexpected legal challenge.
