The FBI, under the leadership of Director Christopher Wray, reportedly identified the January 6th pipe bomb suspect, Brian Cole, as early as April 2021. Yet, for reasons that remain unclear, Cole wasn’t apprehended or charged with a crime until almost four years later.
Brian Cole, a 30-year-old resident of Woodridge, Virginia, was finally taken into custody and charged with the use of an explosive device and attempted malicious destruction. The charges stem from pipe bombs he allegedly planted at the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters on January 5th, the night before the Capitol riot.
Investigators say Cole confessed to planting the devices. This admission came after a painstaking investigation that, according to some accounts, had already pinpointed him as a person of interest nearly a year into the previous administration.
Remarkably, former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that investigators solved the case without uncovering any new evidence. This suggests the crucial pieces were in place much earlier than publicly acknowledged.
The FBI’s identification of Cole hinged on meticulous tracking of his digital footprint. An affidavit details how investigators used his phone’s connection to cell towers and his credit card transaction history to build their case.
Records show the FBI scrutinized a total of seven accounts – one checking account and six credit cards – spanning several years. They meticulously reviewed transaction histories, ultimately tracing Cole’s movements to the vicinity of the RNC and DNC headquarters on January 2nd, 2021.
A report from the January 6th Select Committee, comparing publicly released documents, highlighted a significant detail. In April 2021, investigators identified a cell phone user in the area of the DNC headquarters around the time the suspect was seen on video. They obtained historical cell tower data, but the report notes it’s unclear what actions were taken with that information.
The affidavit revealed specific data points: Cole’s phone connected to cell towers consistent with his presence near both the RNC and DNC between 7:39 p.m. and 8:24 p.m. on January 2nd. The data even pinpointed the specific cell tower sectors involved in those transactions.
Those who know Cole paint a picture of a deeply private individual. His family describes him as an “autistic recluse” and a “computer nerd” who lived in his parents’ basement. This description stands in stark contrast to the image of a politically motivated actor.
Adding another layer to the puzzle, Cole’s grandmother stated he has no political affiliation and is not a supporter of Donald Trump. This challenges any simple narrative linking him to the events of January 6th.
Cole recently made his first court appearance in Washington D.C., facing the charges that have lingered for years. The questions surrounding the delay in his arrest, and what the FBI knew when, continue to fuel debate and demand answers.
