Former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel is questioning the sincerity of Mamdani’s campaign promises, alleging a direct contradiction between his rhetoric and his choices.
McDaniel, now leading the Competitiveness Coalition, a group advocating for free market principles, has directly appealed to Mamdani to reconsider his selection of Lina Khan as co-chair of his transition team. Khan previously served as chair of the Federal Trade Commission under President Biden, and McDaniel argues her presence undermines the mayor-elect’s stated goal of making New York City more affordable.
The core of McDaniel’s argument rests on Khan’s track record. She paints Khan as a figure whose policies actively contribute to inflation by stifling innovation and hindering business growth. This, McDaniel contends, directly clashes with Mamdani’s promises to ease the financial burden on New Yorkers.
McDaniel points to Khan’s actions during her time at the FTC, specifically citing her opposition to a proposed merger between Amazon and iRobot, the maker of the Roomba vacuum. The resulting disruption, McDaniel claims, led to iRobot’s bankruptcy and the loss of 350 jobs, a stark example of unintended consequences.
Beyond domestic impact, McDaniel alleges Khan actively sought to increase regulatory burdens on American companies operating abroad, even directing taxpayer resources to support European regulators. This, she argues, placed American businesses at a disadvantage.
Further fueling McDaniel’s concerns are reports of communication between Khan and Temu, a company with ties to the Chinese Communist Party. McDaniel suggests this contact raises questions about prioritizing American interests and potentially aiding competitors.
