CARE HOME CASH STOLEN for HIGH-ROLLER BETS!

An elderly woman’s final wishes were brutally twisted in a calculated scheme involving a British care home and a devastating betrayal of trust. The case, centered around Amberley Care Home in Brierley Hill, revealed a £175,000 fraud fueled by greed and a dangerous addiction.

At the heart of the deception was 85-year-old Rita Barnsley, whose vulnerability was exploited by a former manager, Jamiel Slaney-Summers. A forged will was meticulously crafted, designed to divert Mrs. Barnsley’s life savings into the hands of those who preyed upon her.

The manipulation unfolded in January 2021, triggered by a routine buzzer call from Mrs. Barnsley’s room. Two concerned care workers rushed to assist, only to be confronted by Slaney-Summers, who urgently demanded their signatures on a document – a crucial section of which was deliberately concealed.

That document was a complete fabrication, riddled with inconsistencies. Investigators later discovered “different handwriting and coloured pens used throughout,” exposing the sham for what it was. Slaney-Summers colluded with the care home owners, Graham and Lyn Walker, to alter the documents and name themselves as the sole beneficiaries of Mrs. Barnsley’s estate.

The presiding judge, visibly shaken, described the fraud as “shocking” and “outrageous.” He specifically praised the diligent work of trading standards officers, Kuldeep Maan and Mark Beesley, whose investigation brought the perpetrators to justice.

The investigation began with a concerned call from Verna, Mrs. Barnsley’s cousin, who raised suspicions about the altered will. Maan and Beesley quickly uncovered a pattern of suspicious withdrawals, revealing that Slaney-Summers had been systematically draining Mrs. Barnsley’s bank account – a staggering £6,000 – to feed a relentless gambling habit.

Slaney-Summers was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for her callous actions. The judge’s sentencing underscored the severity of the abuse of trust and the devastating impact on a vulnerable woman who had spent her life building her estate.

Council officials condemned Slaney-Summers’ behavior as “horrific,” emphasizing her deliberate intent to steal every penny earned by the elderly pensioner. Graham and Lyn Walker now await their own sentencing, though a court date has been delayed due to Mr. Walker’s health concerns.

The case has prompted a critical review of safety measures within care facilities. Adult Social Care inspectors emphasized the need for “robust measures” to prevent such abuse and protect vulnerable individuals. The outcome serves as a stark warning and a testament to the importance of vigilance and thorough investigation.
