A carefully constructed illusion of wealth and lineage unraveled, leaving a trail of nearly $30 million in losses and a nationwide manhunt. Mary Carole McDonnell, 73, now finds herself on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, accused of a year-long fraud that exploited the trust of banks and financial institutions.
McDonnell allegedly presented herself as an heiress to the prominent McDonnell Aircraft family, weaving a tale of a hidden $80-million trust fund. This fabricated fortune became the cornerstone of her scheme, allowing her to secure loans and funds she had no intention of repaying.
The deception unfolded across Los Angeles and Orange County, California, between July 2017 and May 2018. She specifically targeted Banc of California, allegedly siphoning off $14.7 million under false pretenses, a debt that remains unpaid.
But Banc of California wasn’t her only target. The FBI believes McDonnell extended her fraudulent activities to other financial institutions, accumulating an additional $15 million through similar deceptive practices.
Now facing charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, McDonnell vanished after a warrant for her arrest was issued. Her ability to disappear speaks to a calculated and resourceful nature.
Investigators currently believe McDonnell is hiding in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, seeking refuge beyond the reach of US law enforcement. However, she also maintains connections to Montgomery, Alabama, suggesting potential alternative havens.
Before her alleged crimes, McDonnell operated as the CEO and founder of Bellum Entertainment, a television production company based in Burbank, California. That company is now defunct.
Interestingly, Bellum Entertainment itself faced scrutiny prior to its closure, with reports of unpaid wages to former employees surfacing with the California Labour Commission, hinting at a pattern of financial irregularities.
