TEEN KILLER FREED: He'll Live With His WIFE?!

TEEN KILLER FREED: He'll Live With His WIFE?!

A shadow from 1991 has lengthened, reaching into the present with a parole board’s decision. Bradley Paetsch, who brutally ended the life of 16-year-old Stephanie Spooner in her Okotoks home, has been granted full parole. He will now live with the woman he married while imprisoned for the first-degree murder he committed.

Stephanie was a Grade 9 student, full of promise, when her former boyfriend, then 18, extinguished her future. The attack wasn’t a sudden outburst; Paetsch had already attempted to harm her, slashing at her jacket with a knife. Her family, sensing the danger, desperately tried to shield her, but their efforts were tragically too late.

Paetsch, who legally changed his name to Tristan Ryan, received a life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years. Yet, the system allowed for pathways back into society, and he pursued them relentlessly. He engaged in counseling, participated in programs, and cultivated a relationship that ultimately became a marriage – a relationship presented as a cornerstone of his rehabilitation.

Stephanie Spooner was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend Tristan Ryan on Jan. 23. 1991. Ryan was granted full parole for the second time on December 11, 2025.

The parole board acknowledged the horrific nature of the crime and the enduring pain inflicted upon the Spooner family. These were considered “aggravating factors,” weighed against assessments indicating Ryan now poses a moderate, but manageable, risk of reoffending. A psychological evaluation offered a glimpse into his current state, but it couldn’t erase the past.

His wife’s unwavering support was a key element in the decision. She testified at the hearing, confirming his weekend visits to her home had been uneventful. The parole officer emphasized the relationship would be closely monitored, a fragile safeguard against potential harm.

For Stephanie’s family, the news was a painful echo of a loss that never truly fades. “Life should be life,” stated Robin Spooner, married to Stephanie’s brother, her voice laced with grief and frustration. She argued that the premeditated nature of the murder demanded a different outcome, a permanent consequence for a deliberate act.

The family had fought tirelessly to keep Ryan far from their lives, specifically requesting a ban from the city of Calgary. The parole board, however, only agreed to exclude Okotoks, the town where Stephanie’s life was stolen. The denial of the broader ban, and the lack of explanation, felt like a further injustice.

The fear of a chance encounter haunted them. The thought of a family member unexpectedly crossing paths with the man who shattered their world was unbearable. They deserved, at the very least, the comfort of knowing their community was safe from his presence.

Ryan’s journey through the corrections system has been marked by both progress and setbacks. He initially gained early parole in 2010 under a now-repealed clause, but it was revoked a year and a half after full parole was granted in 2018 due to violations. He spent time in a medium-security institution before returning to a Calgary halfway house for the past eighteen months.

At the hearing, Ryan expressed a desire for a normal life, speaking of completing available programs and finding employment. He framed his release as “the next step,” a transition into a future he hopes to build. But for the Spooner family, there is no moving forward, only living with the enduring weight of a past that refuses to stay buried.

His parole comes with strict conditions: continued treatment, abstinence from drugs and alcohol, reporting any new female relationships, avoiding Okotoks, and complete separation from the Spooner family. These are the boundaries meant to contain a past that continues to cast a long, dark shadow.
