A Minnesota high school is facing intense scrutiny after its principal issued a warning: students expressing positive views about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could face suspension.
Principal Paul Paetzel of Edina High School communicated this stance in a letter to parents, asserting that any reference to ICE or President Trump’s deportation policies clashes with the school’s desired “culture.” He emphasized the importance of language and behavior that upholds the dignity of every student.
The principal’s letter explicitly stated that “making light of immigration threats or referencing ICE in ways that cause fear or humiliation” constitutes a serious offense. Such actions, he argued, directly undermine the school’s commitment to a safe and equitable learning environment.
Paetzel made it clear that the school would enforce its discipline policy, with consequences potentially reaching suspension, for any student engaging in this type of behavior. The core principle, he stated, is protecting every student’s right to feel safe, respected, and valued.
