Authorities say they will release person of interest detained in Brown University shooting

A chilling uncertainty has descended upon the Brown University campus after a shooting left two students dead and nine injured. The initial hope of a swift resolution crumbled Sunday night with the release of the sole person of interest, leaving investigators without a confirmed suspect and a community gripped by fear.

The dramatic turn of events unfolded during a late-night news conference, revealing that evidence initially pointing to the detained individual had failed to corroborate under scrutiny. Attorney General Peter Neronha acknowledged the frustrating setback, stating that the investigation had been forced to “regroup and go in another direction.”

“We have a murderer out there,” Neronha declared, a stark reminder of the danger that remains. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley echoed this sentiment, recognizing the renewed anxiety the news would inflict upon the community.

A police vehicle rests at an intersection near crime scene tape at Brown University, Sunday, Dec. 14, 2025, in Providence, R.I., following a Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025 shooting at the university.

The shooting occurred during the height of final exam week, a traditionally busy period on campus. Brown University swiftly canceled all remaining academic commitments, allowing students to leave, a decision reflecting the profound impact of the tragedy.

Eyewitness accounts paint a terrifying picture of the chaos. Students barricaded themselves in rooms, hid behind furniture, and described hearing a barrage of over 40 rounds fired from a 9mm handgun within the engineering building. One video captured the palpable fear of students in a library as police responded to the unfolding crisis.

University President Christina Paxson, visibly moved, spoke of her conversations with students, both those on campus and recovering in hospitals. She highlighted the remarkable resilience and mutual support displayed by the student body amidst unimaginable trauma.

Authorities had initially focused on a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin, taking him into custody at a nearby hotel. Two handguns and loaded magazines were recovered during the arrest, one even equipped with a laser sight. However, the evidence ultimately proved inconclusive.

As of Sunday evening, one wounded student had been discharged, while seven remained in critical but stable condition, and another in critical condition. Among the injured is a recent graduate of Durham Academy, Kendall Turner, whose parents are at her side.

Despite the ongoing investigation, officials have not issued another shelter-in-place order, though an increased police presence remains on campus. The initial lockdown, lasting throughout Saturday night, was lifted Sunday morning, but the sense of vulnerability persists.

A community gathering originally planned as a holiday lighting ceremony transformed into a vigil for the victims. Mayor Smiley, inspired by the courage of the wounded students he visited, noted that one survivor credited active shooter drills with aiding their response.

Investigators are still working to determine how the shooter gained access to the classroom within the Barus & Holley building, a complex housing the School of Engineering. While outer doors were unlocked, exam rooms required badge access.

Emma Ferraro, a chemical engineering student, recounted hearing the initial gunshots while working in the lobby and fleeing to safety. Surveillance footage shows a suspect, dressed in black, departing the scene.

Remarkably, Eva Erickson, a doctoral candidate and recent contestant on the reality show “Survivor,” had left the building just fifteen minutes before the shooting began. She shared her experience of being locked down on campus and confirmed the safe evacuation of her lab partner.

The tragedy has shaken Brown University, a historic institution with a legacy of academic excellence. As the investigation continues, the community grapples with grief, fear, and a desperate search for answers.
