SHE'S BUILDING AN EMPIRE. AND SHE'S CHANGING EVERYTHING.

SHE'S BUILDING AN EMPIRE. AND SHE'S CHANGING EVERYTHING.

A quiet revolution is underway in the Philippines. Women are driving economic growth with remarkable innovation and resilience, shattering expectations and building businesses at an astonishing rate. Recent data reveals a powerful trend: 66% of all micro, small, and medium enterprises, and 62% of newly registered businesses, are led by women.

But this success story only reveals part of the picture. The narrative of Filipina entrepreneurship doesn’t encompass the full scope of women’s economic contributions. Millions more women navigate a vastly different landscape, one often characterized by instability and unseen hardship.

An estimated 70% of the Filipino workforce operates within the informal sector, and a disproportionate number are women. They fill crucial roles – from home-based businesses to contractual work – yet often lack the fundamental protections afforded to formal employees. They toil tirelessly, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy, yet remain vulnerable, without fair wages, benefits, or job security.

Despite this precarious existence, these women persevere. They are the backbone of countless communities, their dedication unwavering even in the face of systemic challenges. A critical lack of data and legislative attention continues to deny them basic rights, perpetuating a cycle of vulnerability.

Alongside the informal workforce, a growing number of women are entering professional fields. In 2024 alone, one million women joined the workforce, fueled by the expansion of the digital economy. Educational attainment is rising, with women achieving parity with men in high-skilled professions like medicine, law, and education.

The impact extends far beyond national borders. Filipina Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) represent a significant portion of the diaspora, with 1.20 million women comprising the majority of those working in the service sector. Their remittances are a vital lifeline, supporting families and injecting crucial capital into the Philippine economy.

Even in the highest echelons of corporate power, women are making inroads. While progress is incremental, the numbers are encouraging. In 2022, 13% of CEOs in publicly listed companies were women, and women held 22% of board seats. This growing representation signals a shift towards more inclusive and innovative leadership.

However, significant barriers continue to impede women’s full economic participation. Discrimination, limited access to training, persistent wage gaps, and the weight of societal expectations all contribute to the challenges they face. The fight for equal opportunity and fair compensation is far from over.

A particularly insidious obstacle is the burden of unpaid care work, disproportionately shouldered by women. Studies reveal that this unpaid labor actively hinders economic growth, preventing women from pursuing employment or advancing their careers. Societal norms often reinforce this imbalance, perpetuating a cycle where women are expected to prioritize domestic responsibilities.

Recognizing these challenges is the first step towards meaningful change. Empowering women isn’t simply a matter of fairness; it’s an economic imperative. Policies that protect workers in the informal sector, provide support for caregiving responsibilities, and challenge ingrained gender biases are essential.

Investing in women is investing in the future of the Philippines. When women thrive, their families and communities flourish. Prioritizing their economic empowerment unlocks a vast reservoir of potential, driving innovation, fostering sustainable growth, and building a more equitable society for all.

With almost half the population being women, their full participation is not just desirable, it’s essential. Uplifting Filipina women means uplifting the entire nation.
