Arts & Culture (12/17/25)

December 15th marked a dual celebration of Filipino artistry and revolutionary history. The Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA), a prestigious organization dedicated to Filipino poetry, commemorated its 40th anniversary. This milestone coincided with the 150th birth anniversary of Emilio Jacinto, the brilliant strategist known as the “Brains of the Katipunan.”

The LIRA anniversary began with a poignant wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of Jacinto, a tribute to the spirit of rebellion and artistic expression that both events embody. Twenty promising writers, recognized through LIRA’s literary contests and collaborations with Quezon City and San Anselmo Press, were honored, including celebrated poets En Villasis, Mikael de Lara Co, and Frank Cimatu.

Across Manila, Jacinto’s descendants gathered at the Kartilya ng Katipunan monument, joining the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the City of Manila in remembering his enduring legacy. Filmmaker and writer Real Florido, along with Jeff Jacinto representing the family, paid respects to a man whose ideals fueled a nation’s fight for independence.

As the Christmas season deepens, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is embracing a beloved Filipino tradition: Simbang Gabi. From December 16th to 24th, dawn masses will be held at the CCP Annex Parking Lot, offering a moment of quiet reflection before the day begins.

The culmination of Simbang Gabi on December 24th promises a particularly special experience. Beginning at 7 p.m., attendees can enjoy a captivating nativity story and a breathtaking performance by the renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, accompanied by the soaring vocals of soprano Myramae Meneses, before the 8 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass.

For families seeking a magical holiday experience, Ballet Manila is bringing the timeless tale of Snow White to life. Performances will run from December 25th to 29th at the Aliw Theater, offering a dazzling spectacle for all ages.

This year’s production features a unique element: two alternating casts will portray Snow White and her Prince. Audiences can enjoy the chemistry of real-life couple Abigail Oliveiro and Mark Sumaylo, or witness the fresh pairing of Nanami Hasegawa and Romeo Peralta.

Looking ahead to 2026, Repertory Philippines (REP) has unveiled its 89th season, themed “By love, transformed.” The season promises a diverse range of productions, beginning with “Unplugged: Staged Readings Reimagined,” featuring Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” and Anton Chekhov’s “The Proposal.”

The season will continue with the grand musical “The Man of La Mancha,” a collaboration with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, followed by a delightful production of “Cinderella” for young audiences. REP will conclude its season with Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” promising a year of captivating theatrical experiences.
