A peaceful afternoon walk turned tragically devastating for a young mother in Chilliwack. On Monday, while enjoying a trail with her two children, a falling tree branch struck and killed the 27-year-old woman during a ferocious windstorm.
The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near a popular dog park on Island 22. Witnesses described the weather as relentlessly harsh, a chaotic blend of torrential rain and violently gusting winds that swept through the region.
Earlier in the day, Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued a wind warning, forecasting gusts potentially reaching 80 kilometers per hour. The alert served as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable power, a warning tragically unheeded in this instance.
Bystanders on the trail immediately rushed to help, providing crucial first aid and swiftly contacting emergency services. Despite the desperate efforts of paramedics, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Remarkably, her two children escaped physical harm. They are now safely in the care of family, shielded from the heartbreaking reality of their loss. Authorities have confirmed the children are receiving support during this incredibly difficult time.
The B.C. Coroners Service is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Out of respect for the grieving family, police are honoring their request for privacy and will not be releasing the woman’s name.
Island 22 Regional Park, a sprawling 1.3 square kilometer haven, was immediately closed to the public following the incident, remaining shut down on both Monday and Tuesday. The closure allowed for investigation and a period of mourning.
The threat of strong winds persists across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Environment Canada’s special weather statement warns of continued gusts expected late Tuesday and into Wednesday, urging continued caution.
