The father-son duo reportedly arrived in Davao City, Philippines, on November 1st aboard Philippine Airlines Flight PR212 from Sydney. They remained in the country until November 28th, just weeks before the attack on the Hanukkah celebration in Bondi Beach, Australia.
Hotel staff and Philippine police paint a picture of isolation. The pair rarely ventured from their room, and when they did, it was for brief periods. Notably, they reportedly avoided all interaction with other guests and received no visitors during their entire stay.
Initial speculation centered on the possibility of the father and son receiving training from Islamist groups operating within the Philippines. However, authorities have so far dismissed these claims, stating there is no evidence to support them.
Davao City is located on the island of Mindanao, a region that has faced ongoing security concerns. While generally under a “Reconsider Travel” advisory, Davao City itself is considered an exception, though the surrounding areas remain volatile.
Mindanao has a history of terrorist activity, including a devastating siege of Marawi City in 2017. This five-month conflict, waged by Islamic State-inspired militants, displaced 350,000 people and resulted in over 1,100 deaths.
