CANAL SKATING DREAM MELTING AWAY!

CANAL SKATING DREAM MELTING AWAY!

The promise of winter magic on the Rideau Canal Skateway hangs in the balance. Just as crews were making significant headway in preparing the ice, a surge of unseasonably warm weather is poised to halt progress.

Environment Canada predicts a dramatic shift in temperatures, forecasting highs well above freezing for the next three days. Wednesday will bring 4°C, followed by 5°C on Thursday and a concerning 7°C on Friday.

The forecast isn’t simply mild; it’s variable. Wednesday anticipates cloudy skies and potential showers, while Friday could see a mix of flurries and rain. Despite the daytime warmth, overnight lows are expected to dip to around -11°C, though windchill will make it feel closer to -15°C.

The NCC started the process of flooding the Rideau Canal Skateway near Bank Street in Ottawa on Monday.

A glimmer of hope appears on the horizon with Saturday’s forecast, predicting a return to sun and cloud with a 40 percent chance of flurries. This offers a potential window for ice-building to resume, but the damage from the warm spell remains to be seen.

The National Capital Commission, responsible for the Skateway’s operation, acknowledged the impending thaw earlier in the week. Despite the awareness, initial ice preparation had been remarkably successful.

Maryam El-Akhrass, an NCC spokesperson, explained that early December’s consistent cold allowed crews to flood the ice twice – first from the Bank Street Bridge to Patterson Creek on Sunday, and then extending to the Laurier access point on Monday. This initial progress was encouraging.

Now, operations are paused, awaiting a sustained return to frigid temperatures. The NCC emphasizes the importance of public cooperation, urging everyone to stay off the ice until the Skateway is officially declared open for safety and to protect the ongoing work.

The Skateway has seen remarkably early openings in the past. In both 1972 and 1981, skaters enjoyed the ice as early as December 18th. However, those were exceptional circumstances, and the current situation presents a significant challenge.

The delicate balance of nature dictates the fate of this beloved winter tradition. For now, the Skateway remains a hopeful, but frozen, dream, awaiting the return of true winter’s embrace.
