The Empire State Building in New York City was the site of a dramatic public proposal on Wednesday at noon, with two masked individuals scaling the iconic skyscraper.
The pair, who remained anonymous, climbed to the top of the building holding a banner reading "when the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace." After a response from the NYPD Emergency Services Unit, they appeared to take down the banner and climb down from the antenna to a lower platform.
One of the individuals then pulled out an engagement ring from a backpack, got down on one knee, and proposed to their partner in a romantic gesture.
The couple was later taken into custody by NYPD officials, with charges pending. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
The NYPD Emergency Services Unit responded quickly to the situation, with roughly 40 police officers remaining at the scene to maintain order and direct traffic around the building.
The entrance to the Empire State Building on Fifth Avenue, between West 33rd and 34th streets, was blocked off due to the incident, with pedestrians gathering on surrounding corners to watch the situation unfold.
The Empire State Building stands 1,454 feet tall, including its spire and antenna, making it the fourth-tallest building in New York City, the sixth-tallest in the U.S., and the 43rd tallest tower in the world.
