A coordinated strike against illegal gambling dens has unfolded across Florida, spearheaded by the Florida Gaming Control Commission alongside federal agencies. Operation Funny Money, a joint effort with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), signals a significant escalation in the fight against unauthorized gaming operations within the state.
Alana Zimmer, Executive Director of the Florida Gaming Control Commission, emphasized the agency’s commitment to dismantling these illicit businesses. She stated the commission actively seeks partnerships to combat illegal gambling, vowing to shut down establishments operating outside the bounds of the law and permanently close their doors.
Seized gambling machines are now secured in a dedicated FGCC storage facility, meticulously preserved as evidence for the ongoing federal investigation. Recovered funds from these machines are also being carefully documented by HSI evidence technicians, building a comprehensive case against those involved.
Florida law strictly limits where gambling can occur, confining it to a select group of licensed facilities. Currently, only eight pari-mutuel facilities in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, along with designated locations operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, are authorized to offer gaming.
The commission forcefully reiterated that offering slot machine gaming or any other unauthorized form of gambling at unlicensed facilities is a direct violation of Florida law. This latest operation underscores a zero-tolerance policy towards those who attempt to circumvent these regulations and profit from illegal gambling activities.
The collaborative nature of Operation Funny Money demonstrates a unified front against the proliferation of illegal casinos, sending a clear message that such operations will not be tolerated within the state’s borders. The investigation continues, promising further action against those who seek to exploit loopholes and undermine the integrity of Florida’s regulated gaming landscape.
