Another 37 per cent endure waits stretching from three to six months – time that could be critical in the progression of an illness.
Official guidelines from Ontario Health suggest a far shorter timeframe for non-emergency cases, aiming for diagnostic scans within two to 28 days, depending on medical urgency. However, these targets are consistently missed, leaving patients in a frustrating limbo.
This isn’t a localized problem. National data confirms that Canada as a whole is grappling with extended wait times for diagnostic imaging, a situation that has worsened since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to lag behind pre-pandemic levels.
The frustration is palpable among those on the front lines of healthcare. Family physicians are advocating for a fundamental shift in how referrals are managed, envisioning a centralized, electronic system to streamline the process and prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition.
The idea has garnered overwhelming support. An astounding 95 per cent of those surveyed expressed favor for this modernized approach, echoing similar calls for reform made by the Ontario Medical Association just last year.
