CHICAGO'S KIDS FACE A BLEAK CHRISTMAS: CAN YOU SAVE THEIR HOPE?

CHICAGO'S KIDS FACE A BLEAK CHRISTMAS: CAN YOU SAVE THEIR HOPE?

As Christmas nears, my journey across America brings to mind the children of my South Side Chicago neighborhood. They are bright, hopeful faces, many navigating the challenges of single-parent homes, quietly dreaming of joy and simple gifts this season.

We don’t choose the circumstances of our birth, but we absolutely possess the power to shape our lives. For some, that path is steeper, burdened by limited opportunity and a system that can feel like it’s working against them. What these children truly yearn for isn’t fleeting trends, but lasting foundations: safety, education, and unwavering hope.

I remember Devin Howard, a young man once lost to the streets, feeling trapped by poverty and violence. Through vocational training at Project H.O.O.D., he discovered a skill, built confidence, and now thrives in the construction industry, living a life of purpose and dignity.

These aren’t isolated incidents. Every day, we witness transformations at Project H.O.O.D. – young men finding direction, families finding stability. A recent graduate, beaming with pride, told me he wanted to be “strong and helping others,” a testament to the power of belief and mentorship.

Our construction program boasts a remarkable 94% graduation rate, placing hundreds in well-paying jobs. We’ve launched businesses, provided meals for families in need, and actively worked to interrupt cycles of violence through peacemaking and trauma healing. Imagine the impact when our new center is fully operational.

That’s why I began walking across America in September, starting from Times Square, embarking on a 3,000-mile journey. Each step is fueled by a commitment to raise the final funds needed to complete the Robert R. McCormick Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center.

This isn’t about politics; it’s about fundamental principles: merit, hard work, faith, family, and the enduring promise of the American Dream. It’s a response to decades of policies that have inadvertently held our community back.

Construction of the 90,000-square-foot center is progressing steadily. Steel beams reach for the sky, and concrete is being poured, creating a space that will house vocational training, entrepreneurship hubs, counseling services, a theater, athletic facilities, and a private Christian school for boys.

We’ve already seen encouraging results in our neighborhood, with a decrease in violence thanks to our prevention efforts. But the scars of the past remain, a painful reminder of lives lost and families broken. Too many young Black men have been denied the chance to reach their full potential.

Unfortunately, some local leadership seems to be hindering progress. Policies that downplay crime, prioritize spending elsewhere, limit school choice, and lower academic standards ultimately harm the very communities they claim to serve, perpetuating dependence instead of fostering empowerment.

True empowerment isn’t found in handouts, but in faith-based initiatives like Project H.O.O.D. – initiatives that cultivate self-reliance, healing, and a belief in the inherent worth of every individual. It’s about completing this center debt-free, providing earned opportunity, and instilling hope.

I’ve walked through rain and sun, enduring hardship to demonstrate that faith, generosity, and determination can revitalize forgotten neighborhoods. Just as a beacon of light shone in Bethlehem, we can bring that same light to the children of Chicago.

They deserve more than promises; they deserve miracles made real. Let us declare, with unwavering conviction: these children will rise, they will thrive, and they will lead. Merry Christmas, Chicago. With faith, miracles aren’t just possible—they are promised.
