Deepak Paradkar, a 62-year-old lawyer, walked free on bail Tuesday morning, a temporary reprieve before facing a potential extradition to the United States. Paradkar stands accused of far more than simply providing legal counsel. Authorities allege he actively participated in Wedding’s criminal enterprise, even going so far as to advise Wedding to eliminate a witness – a chilling accusation that carries the weight of a potential life sentence if he’s convicted in the U.S.
The bail decision, handed down by Justice Peter Bawden, requires a staggering $5,250,000 surety. Paradkar’s wife and a cousin have stepped forward as guarantors, taking on the responsibility of ensuring he adheres to all court-imposed conditions.
Paradkar’s legal practice has been suspended by the Law Society of Ontario, yet he maintains his innocence. He previously argued for release under strict conditions: 24/7 house arrest, accompanied only by family, and a complete disconnection from electronic devices except for supervised use of his wife’s phone.
Prosecutors argued vehemently against bail, painting a grim picture of Paradkar’s vulnerability. They claimed his connection to Wedding’s network placed his life in immediate danger, labeling him a “liability” should he be released.
