Christmas Eve turned tragic in North York when a car careened into a currency exchange, claiming the life of one man and injuring three others.
The incident unfolded just before 2:30 p.m. on Dufferin Street, near Finch Avenue West, as a Nissan Murano unexpectedly jumped a curb and smashed through the storefront of Kantor Currency Exchange.
A 93-year-old man was behind the wheel when the vehicle lost control within the plaza, transforming a festive afternoon into a scene of chaos and devastation.
Inside the business, a 67-year-old man found himself pinned between the vehicle and the building’s structure, desperately needing rescue.
Firefighters and paramedics worked tirelessly, battling against time and wreckage to free the trapped man, but their efforts proved futile. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to authorities, the victim had been standing within the business when the car struck, leaving him no chance to escape the rapidly unfolding disaster.
Two other pedestrians sustained injuries, one woman requiring a trip to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds, and another receiving medical attention for similar injuries.
Three additional individuals suffered minor injuries and were treated on-site, avoiding the need for hospitalization.
The driver and his passenger remained at the scene, cooperating with investigators and receiving treatment for minor injuries of their own.
