Commuters faced significant delays this morning on the newly launched Finch West Light Rail Transit line. Service ground to a halt between Finch West and Tobermory stations, leaving many scrambling for alternative routes during the peak of the morning rush.
The Toronto Transit Commission initially reported “communication issues” as the cause of the disruption around 8:30 a.m. This wasn’t an isolated incident; earlier in the day, similar problems impacted service between Finch West and Driftwood stations.
Adding to the chaos, a separate blockage on the tracks between Driftwood and Humber College stations brought service to a complete standstill in that section. Shuttle buses were quickly deployed to bridge the gaps, but the added travel time frustrated passengers already adjusting to the new line.
The extent of the delays remains uncertain, with no estimated time for full service restoration currently available. This latest disruption comes on the heels of widespread complaints about the LRT’s unexpectedly slow speed since its recent opening earlier this month.
The Finch West LRT, a project years in the making, has unfortunately been plagued by issues since welcoming its first riders. Concerns about sluggish travel times have already prompted promises from city officials to investigate and expedite improvements.
This morning’s combined communication failures and track blockage represent a significant challenge for the transit system and a frustrating experience for those relying on the new line for their daily commute. The focus now is on swiftly resolving the issues and restoring reliable service.
