Volodymyr Zelenskyy, facing a relentless onslaught, has stated Ukraine’s unwavering commitment to ending the war with Russia, even if it requires extraordinary measures. This declaration precedes a crucial meeting with former President Donald Trump, scheduled to take place in Florida.
Zelenskyy emphasized a stark reality: global unity is the key to halting Vladimir Putin’s aggression. He warned that any perceived support for Russia, from any nation, will only prolong the conflict and expand its reach beyond Ukraine’s borders. He believes Russia’s ambitions are limitless, regardless of any promises made.
The Ukrainian leader is prepared to present a comprehensive 20-point peace proposal to Trump, a detailed plan aimed at achieving a resolution. This comes after a devastating overnight attack on Kyiv, a barrage of nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles, including hypersonic Kinzhals, targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas.
The attack left a trail of destruction, claiming at least one life and injuring 27 others. Rescue teams are still working to free individuals trapped beneath the rubble of damaged buildings. Zelenskyy described the assault as a brutal demonstration of Putin’s true intentions, a clear rejection of diplomatic overtures.
He pointed to the stark contrast between Russia’s rhetoric and its actions, noting that while representatives engage in discussions, the skies above Ukraine are filled with destructive weaponry. This, he argues, reveals a deliberate strategy to inflict maximum suffering and exert pressure on the international community.
Zelenskyy implored the United States and Europe to demonstrate strength, urging them to utilize their capabilities to respond decisively to Russia’s continued aggression, even during traditionally peaceful periods like the Christmas and New Year holidays. Ukraine, he stressed, did not initiate this war; Russia did. He affirmed Ukraine’s willingness to compromise, citing numerous documented concessions within their peace plan. The singular focus, he reiterated, is to bring an end to the conflict and secure peace for his nation.
However, Zelenskyy acknowledged critical shortcomings in support, specifically highlighting the insufficient supply of air defenses, weaponry, and funding – particularly for drone production. While a recent European decision offers some relief, a constant shortage of resources remains a significant obstacle.
Trump, anticipating the meeting, has asserted his intention to play a decisive role in any potential peace deal, stating that no agreement will be finalized without his approval. He intends to thoroughly evaluate Zelenskyy’s proposal and determine the path forward.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed responsibility for the “massive strike,” justifying it as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on what they described as “civilian objects” within Russia. They stated the attack targeted energy facilities and military-industrial enterprises. Simultaneously, Russian air defenses reported intercepting Ukrainian drones over Krasnodar and Adygeya regions.
