A quiet Friday in Winnipeg shattered as a stolen car careened through city streets, culminating in a shocking collision with a public transit bus. The chaos unfolded quickly, leaving authorities scrambling to apprehend a suspect and unravel the circumstances behind the brazen act.
The incident began when officers attempted a routine traffic stop of a 2014 Mazda 3 GT in the city’s north end. Instead of complying, the driver – identified as a 16-year-old boy – slammed on the accelerator, initiating a dangerous pursuit that would soon put others at risk.
Just blocks from the initial attempt to stop the vehicle, the Mazda disregarded a stop sign and violently impacted the side of a moving transit bus. Remarkably, despite the force of the collision, no one on board the bus sustained injuries, a stroke of incredible luck.
The driver, abandoning the wrecked vehicle, fled on foot, but his escape was short-lived. Police quickly apprehended the teen and took him into custody, where he now faces a staggering array of charges.
A subsequent search of the stolen Mazda revealed a disturbing discovery: a handgun with its serial numbers deliberately erased. Alongside the weapon, officers found an extended magazine and a weapon-mounted light, painting a grim picture of potential intent.
The teen now faces over a dozen charges, including vehicle theft, dangerous driving, and possession of a prohibited firearm. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full scope of the incident and the motivations behind the young man’s actions.
