NEW WEB3 WARRIORS UNLEASHED: Philippines Forges Future Tech Elite!

A new wave of Filipino talent is rising, forged in the crucible of a groundbreaking initiative designed to unlock opportunities in the burgeoning metaverse. A collaboration between YGG Pilipinas and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has yielded its first cohort of Metaverse Filipino Workers (MFWs), equipped to navigate and build within the global digital economy.

The pilot program, launched in the MIMAROPA region, focused on the Move programming language for the Sui blockchain, transforming 50 students into skilled developers. Of the 127 who began the journey, a remarkable 80% were already pursuing higher education in computer science or related fields, demonstrating a pre-existing foundation of technical aptitude.

What set this program apart wasn’t simply building upon existing skills, but bridging a critical knowledge gap. A staggering 76% of participants had never encountered blockchain technology before, and none possessed experience with the Move language – a testament to the initiative’s power to introduce entirely new possibilities.

The curriculum demanded dedication. Each week blended the convenience of online learning with the focused energy of in-person sessions in Puerto Princesa. Crucially, students benefited from direct mentorship from Sui contributors and ecosystem partners, receiving invaluable feedback and code review.

The group was diverse, with women representing 20% of the participants, and students hailing from institutions like Palawan State University and STI College. This blend of backgrounds and perspectives fueled a dynamic learning environment, fostering innovation and collaboration.

James Wing, of Mysten Labs, expressed immense pride in the cohort’s achievements. He highlighted their resilience, particularly in overcoming unexpected obstacles. “We faced a lot of challenges,” he noted, “but they still delivered strong results and truly unique products.”

Those challenges included a direct hit from Typhoon Tino, which brought devastating floods, power outages, and widespread internet disruptions to Puerto Princesa. The final class was forced to cancel, yet the students persevered, achieving a remarkable 40% completion rate for a voluntary program – a powerful demonstration of their commitment.

The culmination of the program saw students present their capstone projects: fully functional prototypes built on the Sui blockchain. They tackled a real-world problem – creating a trustworthy system for recognizing and verifying contributions within communities, a vital asset for future job applications.

The success of this pilot in Puerto Princesa offers a blueprint for scalable blockchain education across the Philippines. It directly supports the DICT’s ambitious goal of creating eight million digital jobs by 2028, establishing regional hubs as engines of innovation and opportunity.

The DICT MIMAROPA played a pivotal role, providing essential infrastructure like training hubs, computer labs, and internet access – even utilizing Starlink to reach remote areas. Simultaneously, YGG Pilipinas, through its Metaversity platform, expertly designed and delivered the curriculum, mentorship, and workshops.
