RICE WARS: Government Defies Market, Prices Set to SKYROCKET!

RICE WARS: Government Defies Market, Prices Set to SKYROCKET!

The price of rice, a staple for millions, remains a critical focus for the nation. Despite rising global costs, the Department of Agriculture has announced it will maintain the current maximum suggested retail price of 43 pesos per kilogram for imported rice – for now.

A scheduled increase in import duties, poised to jump from 15% to 20% on January 16th, hasn’t yet translated to higher prices at the consumer level. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr. confirmed the 43-peso price point will hold as long as the current 15% duty remains in effect, emphasizing the tariff adjustment process is still underway.

This decision stems from a specific executive order designed to protect consumers while acknowledging global market fluctuations. The order dictates that rice import tariffs will adjust in five-percentage-point increments based on movements in international rice prices.

The key benchmark for these adjustments is the monthly average price of Vietnam’s 5% broken rice, as reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization. Currently, that price stands at $361.1 per metric ton – a level that, under the existing rules, would trigger the 20% tariff.

Looking ahead, the Department of Agriculture is preparing for a significant influx of rice. Plans are in motion to import an initial 500,000 metric tons following the expiration of the current import ban on December 31st, with a portion earmarked for distribution through Food Terminals, Inc.

The government is keenly aware of the potential for market manipulation and intends to strategically release price announcements. This proactive approach aims to discourage speculation and maintain a stable supply for consumers.

Ultimately, the decision to hold the MSRP at 43 pesos is a deliberate effort to provide short-term price stability. It’s a calculated move designed to shield Filipino families from the immediate impact of rising global rice costs, while the government navigates the complexities of tariff adjustments and import strategies.
