SHARK HORROR: Triathlete Vanishes, Body Recovered!

SHARK HORROR: Triathlete Vanishes, Body Recovered!

The ocean relinquished its hold, offering a heartbreaking closure to a week of desperate searching. Erica Fox, a 55-year-old triathlete, has been found, her father confirming the devastating news after a body was recovered from a beach in Santa Cruz County, California.

The discovery came a week after the experienced swimmer vanished during a morning swim with her club, the Kelp Krawlers. Witnesses reported a chilling sight – a shark breaching the surface, seemingly with a human form in its grasp. The scene unfolded quickly, leaving fellow swimmers scrambling to shore, only to realize Erica was missing.

Sharon Carey, a member of the swim club, described the growing dread as the realization dawned that Erica hadn’t returned. A numb disbelief settled over the group, fueled by hope that she might have somehow made it to shore unnoticed.

Initial search and rescue efforts spanned 15 grueling hours, but were eventually suspended. However, the search continued, driven by the unwavering determination of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, alongside dedicated independent teams like Bedrock Ocean Exploration and the Angel’s Recovery Dive Team.

On Saturday, California Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit successfully recovered a body using a rope system. Though official identification remained pending, James Fox, Erica’s father, confirmed the heartbreaking truth – it was his daughter.

Erica was no novice to the water. She had conquered two half-Ironman competitions and participated in the challenging Escape from Alcatraz triathlon nearly two decades running. Her passion for the ocean was profound, even extending to a fascination with its most formidable creatures.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office posts photos of their search for Erica Fox in Pacific Grove, California. The caption reads: Although official search efforts were called off on Monday, the Monterey County Sheriff?s Office Dive Team took advantage of favorable diving conditions and continued search efforts today for a missing swimmer off of Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Bedrock Ocean Exploration (based out of Port Richmond) volunteered to work alongside the Monterey County Sheriff?s Office Dive Team and conducted 6 plus hours of Side Scan Sonar (sea floor mapping) utilizing an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) and scanned a few 1000 yard by 500 yard area in effort to locate Erica Fox. Divers dove several areas identified by the equipment, but were unable to locate Erika Fox. The Monterey County Sheriff?s Office wishes to extend their gratitude to the Bedrock crew (Tim, Mike and Byron) for their efforts during today?s search. Due to the predicted incoming unstable weather, the Monterey County Sheriff?s Office Dive Team is suspending their search efforts.

Remarkably, Erica had even attended a “Sharktober” seminar, seeking to understand these powerful predators. A poignant Facebook post revealed her perspective: a photo of a shark swimming peacefully beside a diver, captioned with the thought that the most dangerous animal was often not the shark itself.

The Kelp Krawlers were tragically familiar with the risks of their chosen sport. Just two years prior, another member, Steve Bruemmer, had been bitten by a shark in the same waters. Yet, Erica had publicly expressed feeling safer in the ocean than on a bicycle.

Following the recovery, Juan Heredia, a diver with Angel’s Recovery, shared a moving poem on Facebook, a tribute to Erica’s spirit. He wrote of her becoming one with the ocean, her story carried by the salt, current, light, and silence. “Swim gently, beautiful soul,” he penned, “The ocean keeps your soul now.”

The ocean has claimed a vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of strength, courage, and a unique appreciation for the wild beauty – and inherent dangers – of the sea.
