In a desperate bid for freedom, a fugitive attempted an audacious disguise in a small Italian town. The 38-year-old man, wanted for previous offenses, sought refuge in the most unexpected of places: a life-size Christmas Nativity scene.
The incident unfolded in Galatone, a town in the Puglia region of southern Italy, earlier this month. The fugitive, attempting to evade capture, positioned himself amongst the biblical figures, hoping to blend into the festive display.
He had been convicted in Bologna of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, receiving a sentence of nine months and fifteen days. However, he managed to escape before completing his term, fleeing south in a desperate attempt to disappear.
His plan involved standing motionless amongst the statues of the Three Wise Men, raising his arms in imitation of the sculpted figures. He hoped to be mistaken for part of the elaborate Nativity display erected by the town’s tourism office.
The town’s mayor, Flavio Filoni, unknowingly played a crucial role in the fugitive’s capture. Initially believing the figure to be part of the scene, a subtle movement caught his attention, sparking suspicion.
Filoni described noticing something amiss while admiring the Nativity scene. What appeared harmless at first quickly revealed itself as something far more significant, leading to the fugitive’s discovery.
Alerted by the mayor’s observation, local authorities – a combined team from the Local Police, State Police, and Carabinieri – swiftly moved in. The fugitive’s unusual hiding place offered no real concealment.
The man was promptly arrested and taken into custody, ending his attempt to disappear within the Christmas story. He is now serving the remainder of his sentence in a prison in Lecce, a nearby city.
The incident highlights the dedication of Italian law enforcement and the unexpected places where attempts to evade justice can lead. It’s a story of ingenuity, desperation, and a mayor’s keen eye for detail.
