TEACHER SHOCKS ROYALTY: King Charles Bestows Historic Honor!

A Filipino educator working in London has received one of the United Kingdom’s highest honors: membership in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). The recognition, bestowed by King Charles III, acknowledges Edison David’s profound impact on the British education system.

David, currently an executive headteacher in the London Borough of Lambeth and a lead inspector for Ofsted, the UK’s national education body, was named to the prestigious 2025 New Year Honors List. He described the honor as utterly unexpected, a reward he never actively sought.

“I simply strive for excellence in everything I do,” David explained. “If you don’t begin with a commitment to quality, there’s little point in starting at all.” This dedication, he believes, is the foundation for any lasting achievement.

His journey began in 1994, teaching in a public school in Tarlac City, Philippines. David’s story is a powerful illustration of what can be achieved through relentless effort and unwavering commitment to one’s craft.

He never imagined leading a school in the UK, let alone receiving an MBE. The honor, he says, is a testament to the possibilities that open up when you dedicate yourself to continuous improvement and impactful work.

The MBE is a significant accolade, ranking as the third-highest Order of the British Empire, recognizing individuals for “outstanding achievement” and lasting contributions to their communities. Past recipients include renowned figures like singer Adele and football legend Steven Gerrard.

David joins a growing number of Filipinos recognized for their exceptional service in the UK, including nurse Brenda Deocampo, who received an MBE in 2023 for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even before receiving this honor, David had been proactively sharing his expertise with educational leaders in the Philippines. He’s offered specific, evidence-based recommendations aimed at strengthening the nation’s education system.

He emphasizes the importance of leveraging the knowledge and experience of Filipinos working abroad, believing they hold valuable insights that could benefit the Philippine education landscape. His recommendations aren’t abstract ideas, but practical solutions.

A central recommendation focuses on the implementation of synthetic phonics – a systematic approach to reading instruction – across all schools in the Philippines. He advocates for a comprehensive reading program built upon this foundational skill.

David believes that mastering phonics is crucial for developing strong reading comprehension, enabling students to decode text fluently and draw meaningful inferences. This skill, he argues, is fundamental to academic success.

The need for improved literacy is stark. Recent data reveals that approximately 24.8 million Filipinos struggle with functional illiteracy, hindering their ability to navigate daily life and access information effectively.

David’s story isn’t just one of personal achievement; it’s a call to action. It highlights the power of dedication, the importance of evidence-based practices, and the potential for Filipino educators to make a global impact.
