CAMPUS TERROR UNLEASHED: 911 Calls Reveal Brown University Shooting Nightmare

The afternoon of December 13th descended into chaos at Brown University as reports of gunfire shattered the calm of the campus. Initial 911 calls spoke of a man shot near Manning Walk, quickly escalating into a multi-building emergency involving multiple victims.

Police and fire departments responded immediately, dispatch records revealing a frantic search for a suspect. Within minutes of the first report, authorities were dealing with potential suspects in academic buildings and a person detained in a nearby vehicle.

The initial hour was a whirlwind of activity. Officers encountered a possible suspect in the basement of a building on Thayer Street, followed by a person taken into custody in a bathroom within the same structure. Simultaneously, another individual was detained while inside a vehicle.

As the situation unfolded, hundreds of students sought refuge, barricading themselves inside buildings like Solomon Hall, where an estimated 150 to 300 people huddled together, awaiting news and fearing for their safety.

The Providence Fire Department declared a mass casualty incident, dispatching rescue teams while prioritizing the safety of medics with requests for ballistic protection. Hospitals across the region were alerted, preparing for an influx of critically injured patients.

Victims were discovered scattered throughout the affected buildings – in hallways, stairwells, and even basement areas. Officers methodically cleared each floor, encountering both injured individuals exiting the buildings and groups still barricaded on upper levels, desperately awaiting rescue.

Despite initial reports of an active shooter and ten shots fired within the Ivy League buildings, authorities eventually announced there was no longer an immediate threat, though a comprehensive search continued for hours.

The gunman was later identified as Claudio Neves-Valente, a 48-year-old former Brown University physics student originally from Portugal. He died by suicide following a multistate manhunt, bringing a tragic end to the immediate crisis.

Neves-Valente had studied at Brown from 2000 to 2001 before withdrawing, and university officials confirmed he had no recent affiliation with the institution. The motive behind the shooting remained unclear in the immediate aftermath.

The attack claimed the lives of two students and injured nine others. Tragically, two days later, Neves-Valente was linked to the death of Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno Loureiro.

Those who knew Neves-Valente suggested the attack wasn’t rooted in a personal feud, but rather a deep-seated resentment. One theory posited that he viewed Loureiro as a symbol of the success he himself had failed to achieve.

Investigators believe Neves-Valente may have fixated on Loureiro’s accomplishments, a haunting indication of the internal struggles that ultimately fueled the devastating violence. The campus slowly returned to a semblance of normalcy as students were relocated and buildings were secured.
